Community Outreach

Our commitment to improving the health and well-being of our patients doesn’t begin when they walk through our doors. And it doesn’t end there, either. We know that giving back is not only good for the people we serve in our community, it’s good for our souls. 

In the Community Engagement Report, "Beyond Our Walls," we invite you to experience the many ways in which we partner with, care for, reach out to and engage with our community.

And below, we share a small representation of the ways that our team members help the community and each other through events and financial support.

Dancing with the Richmond Stars, featuring 10 local stars — including our own team members — and professional dancers from Rigby’s Jig, helped raise more than $92,000 for Children’s Hospital Foundation. Proceeds benefited the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. This event is sponsored annually by the VCU Medical Center Auxiliary and Children’s Hospital Foundation.

We supported The Doorways, Richmond’s premier provider of temporary lodging and non-medical services to patients and their families referred through our participating Richmond-area hospital partners, by giving more than $45,500 in sponsorships, volunteerism, donation drives and in-kind donations. Additionally, VCU Health supports The Doorways’ shuttle program, which runs between the VCU Health MCV Campus and The Doorways year-round.

Together with VCU, $172,846 was raised for the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC).

In addition to these funds, VCU Health was recognized by the CVC for giving $39,200 directly to several community organizations. 

Through The Rainbow Society, which helps team members in crisis, 223 team members received a total of $55,304 in assistance. An additional 31 families were able to enjoy meals and gifts during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. 

In countless ways, the VCU Medical Center Auxiliary contributes to make VCU Health a great place to work, receive care and learn. Each year, the Auxiliary awards grants to new and continuing programs throughout the health system, which have direct patient impacts. In 2018, the Auxiliary funded 60 team member-driven grants with a contribution of $300,000.

ProjectSEARCH is dedicated to teaching high-functioning, rising high school seniors with various disabilities marketable employment skills. Together with community partners, the VCU Department of Rehabilitative Services and Richmond Public Schools, we are proud to participate in this program as the city’s only host site. In 2015, we celebrated our sixth class of students at a completion ceremony.
