Cooking Up Funds for Kids

Two years ago, Alka and Tony Sappal, co-owners of India K’ Raja, hosted a New Year’s Eve party at their popular Indian restaurant in Richmond’s West End. Small Donations Make Big Splash

As a child, Eddie Cox was afraid of the water. Today, nearly six decades later, he works part-time as a YMCA lifeguard and certified swimming instructor and has completed three triathlons, swimming .93 miles each race. In October 2011, Eddie, who also volunteers on the Transitional Care Unit (TCU) at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR), began making $25 donations to Children’s Hospital Foundation in honor of those swim lesson students who “make a notable effort to improve their swimming skills.” Since that time, his donations have totaled $1,900. Local Company Remains Committed to Supporting Children

When American Family Fitness began supporting Children’s Hospital Foundation (CHF) 17 years ago, the Richmond-based health club had four locations and 25,000 members. Since that time, as its membership and locations have grown, so too has its commitment to the Foundation, giving more than $423,408 to fund Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s (CHoR) Dental Program, Recreation Therapy Program, Community Therapy Centers, camp scholarships and multiple Transitional Care Unit (TCU) activities including the annual beach trip for children who reside on the hospital’s long-term care unit. Remembering His Legacy

The Ralph Ownby, Jr., M.D. Memorial Fund has been established as a named endowment fund at Children's Hospital Foundation. The fund is given in loving memory of Dr. Ownby by his grandchildren, Willard P. "Will" Milby IV and Margaret E.G. "Meg" Milby. Dr. Ownby was the Jesse Ball du Pont Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU Health System) and appointed as the first medical director at Crippled Children's Hospital, now Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU, in 1971 where he served until his retirement in 1994. Kappa Deltas Make Annual Trek to Hospital

Children's Hospital Foundation (CHF) hosted the annual Kappa Delta Tour Day on Nov. 2 with more than 400 Kappa Delta collegians and alumnae in attendance. Bonnie Warren, Chairman, Kappa Delta Foundation, also attended the event and presented a $25,000 donation to CHF in honor of the sorority's 116th anniversary. Read More >>

Golfing to Make a Difference

For Steve Gohn, this year's Micro Tour golf tournament had special meaning for his family. The 11th annual charity tournament, held Oct. 5 at The Tradition Golf Club at Royal New Kent, raised more than $20,000 for Children's Hospital Foundation (CHF), which supports programs at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) where Steve's 4-year-old grandson, Carter Jackson, is a Children's Feeding Program patient. Annual Support from Kohl's Tops $1 Million

Representatives from Kohl's Department Stores presented Children's Hospital Foundation with a $65,337 donation to fund the Kohl's Dental Outreach Program during the 2013-2014 school year. Hospital Patient Raises Funds for Foundation

In 2011, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) patient Tyler Graves and his parents, Bill and Jeannette, organized a charity golf tournament to help give back to the organizations that helped him through a difficult time. Ball Brings Out the Kid in Everyone

On Nov. 2, the Country Club of Virginia was transformed into scenes of childhood delight as part of the 49th annual Children’s Hospital Foundation Ball. The event, which raised $246,000, was organized by the 50 members of the Foundation’s Junior Board who worked in committees to handle everything from sponsorships and ticket sales to decorations and publicity. Sister of Former Patient Remembers Hospital in Will

Upon her passing in 2012, Mrs. Kathryn K. Walker left a bequest of $500,000 to Children’s Hospital Foundation. Mrs. Walker’s brother, Herbert Arnold Kirby, was a patient at the original Children’s Hospital on Brook Road in the 1920s where he received surgery for an improperly healed broken arm. Read More >>

Pittsburgh Fans Cheer on Steel City Teams, Help Foundation

Every fall since the early 1990s, a group of Pittsburgh sports fans living in Richmond have gathered to watch Steelers games and raise money for Children’s Hospital Foundation. CHoR Specialists Combine Expertise to Surgically Separate Conjoined Twins

Nearly a year after first meeting conjoined twins Maria and Teresa Tapia, medical specialists at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) successfully separated the girls during a 20-hour procedure at the hospital in November. Born in the Dominican Republic, the sisters were joined at the lower chest and abdomen and shared a liver, small bowel, pancreas and biliary system. Read More >>

Capital One Associates Reward Performance by Volunteering

In August, 25 Capital One associates volunteered over two days to prepare dental supply kits for 96 area elementary schools for the Foundation’s Dental Outreach Program. In September, 20 associates supported two shifts during the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Radiothon, and in October, 28 associates and family members staffed two water tables during the Foundation’s 5K/10K Walk/Run. Annual Golf Tournament’s Loser is the Winner

Thirty-six years ago, Lawrence Holtzlander, a local salesman with Air Conditioning Suppliers, Inc., now Aireco, hosted a golf tournament to benefit Children’s Hospital Foundation. Over the years, the tournament has grown from 10 to up to 130 players, raising $152,045 since 1985 when records were first kept. But unlike traditional tournaments where golfers strive for the lowest score, the winner of the Foolish Open tournament is the team with the highest score. Read More >>

Local Girls on the Run Dash for Donations

Three years ago the girls in C.E. Curtis Elementary School’s Girls on the Run program ran one lap around their school’s bus loop for every dollar students donated to Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Wishing Well Program. The first year, the girls and their coaches ran 1,380 laps, or a little more than 153 miles, over several days. They ran 112 miles last year and 132 miles this spring, raising a total of $3,540 since 2009. Read More >>

Stars Dance for Children

The first Dancing with the Richmond Stars event was held on March 18 at the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts. Hosted by the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Hospitals Auxiliary and emceed by NBC12 meteorologist Andrew Freiden, the sold-out event raised $65,000 for Children’s Hospital Foundation during the evening performance and post party. In April 1921, 20 women organized the Sunshine Circle of the King’s Daughters to benefit a variety of charities including what is now Children’s Hospital of Richmond.
