First Steps to Healthy Lifestyles
In the 2014 fiscal year, Children’s Hospital Foundation will support the First Steps Program at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU which is designed to identify childhood obesity in the inpatient setting. The Program will employ a nurse practitioner to meet with families to evaluate current eating and physical activity behaviors, assess readiness to change, help develop a family-based care plan, and facilitate the transition to ongoing care after discharge from the hospital. Based on current admission rates, the Program is expected to impact the care of more than 2,000 children and adolescents annually, more than half of which would likely develop diabetes in their lifetimes without intervention.
