The 50th Annual Children’s Hospital Foundation Ball

Organized by the Junior Board of Children’s Hospital Foundation

The Fiftieth Annual Children’s Hospital Foundation Ball, presented by Davenport & Company LLC, will take place on the evening of Friday, November 1, 2013, at The Country Club of Virginia. The first ball, held in 1964, was The Ambassador’s Ball in which the Italian Ambassador was the guest of honor. “Bravissima Italia” incorporated cultural, civic and special events to salute the exciting, glorious, golden world of Italy. In a tribute to the first ball, the 50th Anniversary Ball will focus on the majesty of the Italian Opera. The Ball will combine all of opera’s arts—lavish musical entertainment, spectacular stage effects, beautiful costumes, and dancing—to create a theatrical backdrop for a magical masked ball.

The Junior Board is excited to continue the “Jewels for Children” raffle for a second year. Conceived and chaired by Richmond jeweler Cheryl Fornash, the raffle will bring together 12 Richmond independent jewelers who have each donated one piece of jewelry worth $1,500 for the raffle. Ball attendees will have the opportunity to purchase $25 tickets, available only at the event, for a chance to win one of the 12 pieces.

Your Support Will Help

For the second year, proceeds from the Children’s Hospital Foundation Ball will benefit children in our region by supporting the Healthy Lifestyles Center (HLC) at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR).

In Virginia, it is estimated that 267,000 children between the ages of 10 and 17 are overweight or obese, increasing the likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, depression or other medical conditions that can lead to an impaired quality of life. Although an increasing number of the nation’s children’s hospitals have programs like the HLC, CHoR’s is the first of its kind in Central Virginia.

The goal of the HLC is to work with children, families, and primary care providers to develop comprehensive treatment plans for patients with obesity and weight-related medical conditions. The HLC began seeing patients in Fall 2012 and serves as a single entry-point for patients and families to CHoR’s comprehensive services, which include cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, nephrology, and much more. During its first year, the HLC aims to provide medical evaluations and treatment plans to more than 100 new patients.
