In addition to supporting Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, Children’s Hospital Foundation supports a variety of pediatric initiatives and outreach programs for the general community, such as Health and Safety Days in Richmond and Petersburg, Fire Prevention Day in Richmond and the Dental Outreach Program. Every year, these programs educate thousands of young children and give them the tools and knowledge to lead safe and healthy lives.
Held annually in Richmond and Petersburg, Health & Safety Day is geared toward elementary school-age children, teachers and families. This free event features interactive exhibits that teach children useful information about hand washing, dialing 911, dental health, bike safety and other general tips about being healthy and staying safe.
This event is made possible by the participation of many community partners, including representatives from local police and fire departments, Red Cross, United Way 211, YMCA and others.
Fire Prevention Day is held annually in Richmond and presents children between the ages of three and five with age-appropriate information and instruction including having pictures and fingerprints taken, dialing 911 and learning how to properly fit and wear a bicycle helmet. The event also features fire safety houses that simulate emergency fire situations, ambulance tours, the police K9 unit and mounted guards.
This event is made possible by the participation of many community partners, including representatives from the Richmond Fire Department, Virginia Department of Forestry, Richmond Ambulance Authority, Richmond Sheriff’s Department and more.
During the 2011-2012 school year, nearly 13,000 Head Start, kindergarten and first grade students received dental education and materials thanks to a partnership between Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Virginia Department of Health – Dental Division and a generous donation from Kohl’s. Resources were provided to students in the counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Prince George and the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg and Richmond.
The program provides posters and information to teachers, as well as toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss and activity books for the students. Click here to learn more >>
