Children’s Hospital Foundation supports the care provided by Children’s Hospital of Richmond by funding a variety of initiatives, including construction projects, program development and physician recruitment. Recent hospital expansions include constructing a new pediatric emergency room, opening the Bon Air Therapy Center, and increasing the size of the Petersburg Therapy Center by more than 1,300-square-feet—all of which improve the hospital’s ability to care for children with the latest technology and in settings close to home.
In addition to construction projects, the Foundation supported the operations of the Recreation Therapy Department, a coordinated care program that brings games, activities and outings to the children that reside in the hospital’s long-term care unit. The program is a unique component of the care that children receive at Children’s Hospital of Richmond, and it is designed to improve physical abilities, reinforce social skills and provide an important opportunity for the children to have more typical childhood experiences.
On top of the direct benefit of improving care, facility and program development helps Children’s Hospital of Richmond with its ongoing commitment to recruit pediatric specialists and sub-specialists to our region. Over the course of just the past few months, the hospital welcomed new specialists in the Divisions of Adolescent Medicine, Allergy and Immunology, Hematology and Oncology, Endocrinology, and General Pediatrics. The value that local pediatric specialists and sub-specialists bring to a community is immeasurable.
