First Visit

We understand that the first visit to VCU Health Cancer & Specialty Care at South Hill can be intimidating and fearsome. Knowing what to expect should help lessen those fears. Please plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

When you first arrive you will meet with a patient service representative who will cover insurance information and have you sign any necessary documents. Please bring a copy of your insurance card and medications with you. Next, you will meet with a nurse. She will prepare you for the visit with the physician. Your physician will spend time going over your medical history and will do a physical exam. Your oncologist will then discuss the status of your disease and possible treatment options. Bringing a list of written questions may be helpful.

Many insurance plans require pre-authorization prior to any treatment. Should you need treatment, and if your insurance requires prior authorization, your treatment will be scheduled accordingly.

Insurance

Understanding insurance can be complicated. It is important that you inform us if you have coverage by a health maintenance organization (HMO) preferred provider (PPO) or another managed care plan.

We are required by Medicare and other insurance providers to collect the appropriate co-pays and deductibles. Please speak to our patient service representative if you have any questions about this requirement.

Please tell us of any personal insurance changes that may occur while you are our patient. Depending on your insurance, it may be necessary to check your insurance card frequently.
