In addition to supporting Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, Children’s Hospital Foundation supports a variety of pediatric initiatives and outreach programs for the general community. Every year, these programs educate thousands of young children and give them the tools and knowledge to lead safe and healthy lives.
KOHL’S DENTAL OUTREACH PROGRAM
Funded by a donation from Kohl’s Cares, the Kohl’s Dental Outreach Program brings dental supplies and learning materials to more than 12,000 students in the Richmond area each year. Now entering its eigth year, the program’s focus on dental health and hygiene meets the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) health requirement for participating schools.
During the 2016-2017 school year, the program will reach Head Start, kindergarten and first grade students in the counties of Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Prince George and the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Richmond and Petersburg. In addition to distributing dental supplies—including a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss—to more than 600 classes, Children’s Hospital Foundation staff will provide in-school instruction, in partnership with VCU Dental, during February’s National Dental Health Month to students at Richmond City schools.
Visit the Kohl's Dental Outreach Program website for more information and dental health resources for your children and family members.
COMMUNITY HEALTH & SAFETY DAYS
Health & Safety Day and Fire Prevention Day are free annual events held for the community, geared towards children ages 4-7.
Health & Safety Day
Held each April, Health & Safety Day features interactive exhibits that teach children useful information about hand washing, dialing 911, dental health, bike safety and other general tips about being healthy and staying safe.
Health & Safety Day is made possible by the participation of many community partners, including representatives from local police and fire departments, Red Cross, United Way 211, YMCA and others.
Fire Prevention Day
Held each October to coincide with National Fire Prevention Month, Fire Prevention Day features age-appropriate information and instruction relating to fire safety. The event features fire safety houses that simulate emergency fire situations, ambulance tours, the police K9 unit and mounted guards.
Fire Prevention Day is made possible by the participation of many community partners, including representatives from the Richmond Fire Department, Virginia Department of Forestry, Richmond Ambulance Authority, Richmond Sheriff’s Department and more.
BIKE SAFETY PROGRAM
Children’s Hospital Foundation partners with the Kiwanis Club of Richmond each year to provide bike helmets to second-graders at Richmond City schools. As part of the Kiwanis Club's Adopt-A-School program and May’s Bicycle Safety Month, representatives from the two organizations visit elementary schools each spring. Students at the participating schools learn about helmet use and bicycle safety during the visits, and they receive an individually-fitted helmet, bike safety stickers and posters with safe riding messages. This program is made possible by a generous gift from the Kiwanis Club of Richmond.
