City of Richmond Free From Tobacco Program
Community Peer Cessation coaches work within the City of Richmond to build community relationships and connect local residents to cessation resources and free nicotine replacement therapy. Email avis.thomas@vdh.virginia.gov or call 804-482-8018 for more information.

Commonwealth and national resources

Telephone Counseling- Virginia Quitline
Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) or visit Quitnow.net/Virginia to speak with a trained quit coach for free. Coaches are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Services are available in English and Spanish. Special multi-call services are available for the uninsured.

Text 2 Quit
If you are ready to quit, text VCU to 47848 to receive free text messages that give continual encouragement, advice and tips for becoming smoke-free. For extra support, text CRAVE, MOOD or SLIP. You will receive 3-5 messages, tips, advice or motivational statements per day for 6-8 weeks. There are also separate texting programs for veterans, pregnant moms and those who want to quit dip. 

If you are thinking about quitting but not ready to stop completely, then text GO to 47848. You can receive messages and daily challenges to help you build your quitting skills. You can opt out at any time.

“This is Quitting” for youth (age 13-24) interested in quitting vaping
“This is Quitting” is a free mobile program from Truth Initiative designed to help young people quit vaping. The first-of-its-kind text messaging program incorporates messages from other young people who have attempted to or successfully quit e-cigarettes. Text DITCHJUUL to 88709.

Becomeanex.org by the Truth Initiative is an online interactive, self-paced and guided quit plan platform that provides peer support from ex-smokers, community forums, live chat support with coaches, optional text messaging, videos and many other features.

FreedomFromSmoking.org
Freedomfromsmoking.org by the American Lung Association is a proven way to quit smoking — and stay quit — even if you’ve tried before and went back to smoking. Get educational pamphlets, complete an online course, talk to a telephone counselor or find a local in-person counselor here.

Cancer.gov
The National Cancer Institute offers an online booklet called “Clearing The Air: Quit Smoking Today” that is designed to provide support at any stage of quitting.

Asco.org
The American Society of Clinical Oncology offers online resources to empower patients with cancer to talk with their cancer care team about quitting tobacco.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention campaign “Tips from Former Smokers” offers online information, videos and tips to quit from former smokers.
